Landscapes
Capturing the light in the landscape, especially at the "golden hour" (late afternoon/early evening) is most important to me when selecting a scene to paint, and is my favorite time to take photos for possible paintings. The light, shadows, and vibrant colors of the landscape continually provide inspiration.

Still Life
Painting still life set-ups in my studio creates an opportunity and challenge for me to capture on canvas, how light plays upon objects, creating a myriad of reflections, shapes, shadows, and colors. When setting up a still life in my studio, I always have a strong light source to create the varied effects, which in turn helps to create a mood and adds drama to the subject matter.

Portrait & Figurative
Portraiture/Figurative art fascinates me in the challenge of capturing a personality, expression, and likeness of a model, while using oils, pastels, and charcoal. It is quite inspiring/exciting for me when the scene tells a "story", such as children playing their instruments, artists painting in the field, young boys fishing, or ballerinas at a dress rehearsal. Working from life is truly ideal, as I like to attend ongoing drawing/painting sessions where there is a model, which in turn, enhances working from a photograph in my studio.
